'Sex sells'.. the saying cannot get more emphasised than in Bollywood movies. Bollywood- a place where movies like Aashiq Banaya Aapne's shows are increased (in a popular multiplex) and those for a patriotic movie Mangal Pandey are reduced.

Obviously, the multiplex looks at it as business. But it reflects on what the Indian audience demand. Mangal Pandey, in my view, told us the story of the sacrifices made by a single hero for ridding the country from the Raj. But movies like ABA, Barsaat, James, etc which arguably have no story make their mark at the box office? Why- one reason.. Audiences prefer to watch pretty girls dancing in skimpy dresses(wont be surprised if they'd disappear soon) than to watch something that narrates bravery. Not that Mangal Pandey failed to compromise to add in some sultry shots, all in the name of selling the movie.

When will the audience wake up and appreciate movies with a moral? Not anywhere b4 31st century I guess??

I completely agree with you its saddening... number of voyeurs in socitey is increasing... sense of pride for the country seems to be nonexistent... how can movies like Bhagat Singh and Mangal Pandey not do well at the box office when Murder can!! it only shows how much our society has degraded!

The failure of "Mangla Pandey" is not a failure of the patriotic feeling, it is a failure of the "team" who were not able to sell the concept in a way that would entertain the audience. What I agree with "deXtEr" is that the taste of audience has changed. On pondering over why, I am more or less convinced that an avg. movie-goer wants to have 3 hrs of mindless entertainment. He already has enough tensions in his hectic life. When movies like "Yuva" and "Hazaroon Khwaishen Aisi" talk about working for the oppressed the majority of the youth acts indifferent to the whole concept.
I feel this is the degradation of the social values.

@sandnya: I would not say that the rise in exposure in movies is any reason to call it a degradation of the society. Though the outlook of the society, i.e. what they consider as a moral v/s immoral may have changed. The reason : "Sex sells" but doesnt make a "Blockbuster"!!

I agree ..wen a film like "No Entry" can be called a hit, then i think "Mangal Pandey" deserves more credit!..
Public mentality does matter in makin a film hit or flop but there are also other contributing factors like direction and puttin ur idea in an appealing way to the public.
Prob Mangel Pandey lacked that to some extent..
But one thing's for sure..Every individual does feel a pride for the country somewhere within him..but, most of the times, doesnt think it to be a big deal or sometimes just fears being ridiculed if he is expressive!
